SOC 203S Diversity and Society is an online course I took during my last semester at ODUThis course examined social diversity and inclusivity in American society and is designed to sensitize students to the roles that typologies such as race, ethnicity, social class, religion, sex and gender, age, health, (dis)ability, sexual orientation, and language play in societal definitions of social diversity.

Through coursework and class discussions, I learned how to compare basic theories and models related to the sociological study of diversity and identify their strengths and weaknesses, define key vocabulary and terms related to diversity, identify professional applications for the study of diversity, describe how hypotheses and research questions related to the sociological study of diversity are formed, describe how data related to the sociological study of diversity are collected, measured, and analyzed, and explain how the social sciences have contributed to our understanding of diverse societies.

We were asked to use course materials like articles, podcasts, movies, etc to complete discussion posts and other coursework. The assignments pushed me to do research about the different aspects of diversity. I analyzed different social groups and how U.S. social norms and expectations affect inter-group relations within our society. Through discussion posts, I was able to collaborate with my peers about the different dimensions of diversity. I gained experience working in a team structure while building my relationship skills such as collaboration and interpersonal communication across cultures.
